Molarity is the amount of solute in moles divided by the volume of solution in liters.
Molarity formula
Use this formula:
M = moles of solute / liters of solution
Example calculation
If 0.50 mol of sodium chloride is dissolved to make 1.00 L of solution, the molarity is 0.50 M.
| Moles | Volume | Molarity |
|---|---|---|
| 0.50 mol | 1.00 L | 0.50 M |
| 1.00 mol | 2.00 L | 0.50 M |
Tips for students
- Convert milliliters to liters before calculating.
- Check that the solute amount is in moles.
- Label the final answer with M or mol/L.
